| Cross paced near the boarding area of the boat. There was only twenty minutes until final boarding but her traveling companion had yet to arrive. She was counting on him to come just so he could bring a sleep spell and keep her from killing everyone upon the boat. Her father claimed he was coming but that man never followed through with plans. Since her childhood, something always came up that caused him to cancel thanks to the Crusaders; they were always being sent off somewhere or trying to help some helpless sap. There was absolutely no point in counting on him for anything.
Lezard seemed like a punctual person so he should have been here. Her icy blue glaze fell upon the temple off into the distance. "Yevon help me," she mumbled to herself. He wasn't late but she still felt so uneasy that she wanted to kill him again. Slowly, her shifted towards eyes towards the boat and felt her heart pounding from it. Because of her aunt's diminishing health, she would have to go to Besaid regardless of his appearance; it would just be easier if he stabbed her with a sleep pin so she didn't have to realize she was trapped on a small piece of wood in the middle of the ocean.
The ocean…
Her eyes opened wide in horror as she stared at the boat. Her mind was already spinning as her heart raced until she heard someone behind her. Quickly, she turned around ready to kill someone when she saw Lezard waving. The woman shook in fear then quickly looked away. "G-good afternoon." She was stuttering?! Her eyes shut as she tried to force herself to pretend she could handle things. Taking a few calming breaths, Cross opened her eyes and glanced at the male.
"Did you find a sleep pin?" she asked. If he didn't bring it, she wasn't too sure what she would do. Her eyes shifted back towards the boat. More than likely, she would freak out and kill everyone on that ship including herself. Cross sighed to herself; it was best they didn't let her stay awake the whole time because there was only so much fear she could withstand before snapping. Nobody wanted her to be on a boat in the middle of the ocean when she snapped. While Sin could sink a boat, Cross was just as much of a threat thanks to her magical powers.
"Please tell me you found one."

| He didn’t find whatever a sleep pin was supposed to be but he did manage to barter for some sleeping powder. Of course, he never used sleeping powder before so he wasn’t sure how one was supposed to go about giving it to people; whether it was a simple inhalation or if it was supposed to be mixed into a drink of sorts. He had to ask about it when it was purchased and he was told that he could do it in a variety of different ways; but the choice most often used was to throw it in the face of a fiend so they immediately were knocked out. If it was being used for household purposes, it would need to be a controlled amount and best mixed with water or some other fluid.
That was yesterday. He woke up stiff in the morning and before he left the temple he was asked approached by crusaders and asked to use her healing powers against the handful of Crusaders that were fighting yesterday again. Yesterday he had giving just enough energy to get them up and moving again; so now they wanted the job finished. He had some time before the boat would depart so he helped them with what he could and much to his surprise, they paid him for his time. It wasn’t much but every bit counted; especially since he’d need more Gil for the fare off of Besaid Island.
After the morning healing, he headed straight for the docks and found Cross waiting outside of the boat and on the docks. Had she been waiting for him? He wasn’t certain but he lifted up a hand and waved over to her as he approached. Upon hearing her stutter he blinked a couple of times in confusion and drew his brows together in thought. Was she alright? She didn’t strike him as the type that ever seemed uncertain or uncomfortable about anything. Actually now that he thought observed her, she just radiated a sense of unease while she stood there.
”Um.. no. But I found something just as well.” The horn went for the boat went off, signifying the last call. ”We better get on before we miss it.” He said before he shouldered his pack and started up the plank that brought him toward the deck. He handed his ticket to the man at the top of the boat and stepped out onto the deck. He headed toward the bow, the front of the ship. There was a crowd of people at the docks waving to loved ones; he didn’t have anyone waving to him. He just looked out into the horizon where all he could see was ocean. ”It’s going to be a long voyage…” He muttered to himself. He didn’t have that sense of final fair well while on the boat this time; probably because he knew he would have to make at least one more stop at Bevelle so he could take the Trials again. Next time he arrived, he would complete it.

| Cross nearly jumped out of her skin the moment she heard the horn of the boat. Her skin was crawling and she felt her lungs having trouble expanding. It was time to get upon that accursed thing and risk a watery grave. Was it too late to run? Once again her eyes closed as she reminded herself it was always too late to run; these thoughts were typical when she had to travel away from Bevelle and go upon a boat. Cross took an uneasy breath.
"Right," she said unenthusiastically before following him. She watched him go up the plank upon the boat first and then rushed up so she didn't have to spend too much time on a piece of wood that could easily collapse. It wasn't a big deal to fall into the ocean since she could swim and Bevelle was right here. The problem arose when they were miles away from any shore and the only thing for miles was water. The water was dangerous; she used it as a type of attack spell against fiends because water could be powerful. It destroyed her village and nearly killed her, and soon she would be trapped within it again.
The woman was trembling as she stood on the ship as Lezard openly commented it would be a long trip. "Yes it will be," she commented back in an uneasy tone. "A very. Long. Voyage." Her anxieties were already peaking and they hadn't left the docks yet. It was going to be a long and dreadful trip. Quickly she shut her eyes before she could convey how absolutely terrified she was. "Uh, maybe we should explore the lower deck," she suggested to her traveling companion. She didn't want to watch them departing and heading slowly towards the rest of the ocean. Cross definitely didn't want to watch her salvation slowly disappear as they drifted further and further away from Bevelle. Balling her hands into fists, she attempted to will herself to stop trembling but she couldn't.
"L-let's go."

| He wasn’t sure she had followed him toward the bow of the ship until she commented as well. Slowly he turned his head to look at her and stared as she stood there acting rather awkward compared to what he was used to seeing from her. there was something definitely wrong with her. She was tense, that much was for certain, he could tell that much by looking at her. She was looking like she was trying to maintain a measure of control over herself and it suddenly dawned on him that maybe his companion had issues with boats. Maybe she had a phobia of boats and that was what was bothering her so much. He wasn’t about to question her about it since she also struck him as the type that didn’t appreciate having others vocally acknowledging issues they were having. He may be rather inadequate with conversations, but Lezard was an observant person.
She suggested going down to the lower deck and he was close to telling her that she could go ahead and he’d meet her down there shortly. He likely watching the send off, to watch the mainland disappear as they pulled away from the land. One look at her told him to cave in before he put up any resistance to the idea and based on the trouble she was having before the boat really started moving, he wondered if maybe he would eventually have to offer her his hand to hold. Honestly, yesterday’s comment he had assumed was a joke but now he wondered if there might have been some truth to it.
”Okay. I need to deposit my things in my cabin anyway.” There wasn’t a lot of spare cabins but the moment you voice the fact that you’re a summoner, you’re giving a private one out of respect while many groups were forced to one large hold where they spent their travels on the floor. He led them down to the lower deck with his staff in one hand and his pack hefted over his shoulder. He glanced down at the small piece of paper that had the cabin number listed on it and kept an eye on passing doors. He went down on hall, saw directions listed on the wall, turned left, and headed down to the end of the hall where he found his room. ”Hmm.. here it is. I’ll be a second.” He announced before he opened his door and headed into his cabin. He moved inside and deposited his pack and staff on the bed. It was a hot day so he removed the white mage jacket he normally downed and headed toward the tiny closet to hang it up. Everything was a wooden structure; appeared much like planking. In his last trip across the ocean, he hadn’t even made it to the cabin. He had stayed out on deck the entire time and watched the ocean.

| They made it inside the ship before her breathing became labored though her nerves were anything but calmed. The inside of the boat was cramped unnecessarily and all she wanted to do was break down every wall so she could breath. Honestly, she wasn't sure if being down here was any better since if Sin attacked she wouldn't be the first to know and defend herself; if the waters turns against them and started to toss the boat around all she would feel was the rocking before everything broke. Nothing good came from ignorance.
Nothing good would come from knowing either.
Slowly, she followed him along as he searched for his cabin. The woman didn't ask to follow him inside or anything once they found his room. All she wanted to do was collapse and start screaming; it was such an irrational reaction. Every fear she had was simply a worst case scenario. Cross had been on boats before and not once did any of them capsize. It didn't guarantee safe voyage on this one and that one in a million possibility drove her crazy. Death was something to fear but it was scariest if it came in the form of the ocean.
Quickly, Cross moved herself against the wall opposite of his door as she closed her eyes and chanted to herself. "Don't go crazy. Don't go crazy." It was such a simple thing to say but so hard of an act to accomplish. With her powers. she could destroy the walls and make there more room to breathe, but at the same time she would be destroying the only thing keeping her from falling into the deep dark abyss that was the ocean. With every second that passed, she was moving further away from land. Besaid was days away and who knew how long she could keep sane.
Lezard came back and she immediately opened her eyes. "You have to use that powder on me, now," she commanded, "Or I'll likely kill us all."

| When he came back out of his room, Cross was quick to start ordering him to use the sleeping powder on her. Subtly, he could feel the boat had already taken off from the docks, ”Um… don’t you want to wait some? I don’t know if I have enough for a trip from beginning to end…” Maybe he could ration it. He wasn’t sure how much it would take to knock her out, but maybe giving her enough to just make her feel drowsy would be enough to calm her down. He shrugged his shoulders before he reached over and grabbed her wrist, ”In that case, come in.” If she was going to get knocked out from a small amount (he wasn’t sure how well she handled the powder) he’d rather her not collapse outside of his door. Once they were inside his cabin he directed her to take a seat on the bed while he rummaged through his belongings.
He pulled out a water canteen that he had filled before he left for the boat and the small pouch of sleep powder. Honestly, the stuff had been far more expensive then he anticipated and didn’t have much to spare at the time. It was after he purchased a ticket for the fare, and he would have stopped to get more when he was given money by the crusaders but he didn’t have time. He didn’t want to be late for the departure and miss the boat… again. He gave a few pinches of the sleeping powder into the canteen and tied the pouch once more before he shook the water to mix it together. This was one of the more practical ways he was told to use the powder.
Satisfied that he had mixed it enough he held it out in offering, ”So… sip that, don’t chug. It might not hit you right away, but give it time to settle.” He wasn’t about to throw the whole pouch in her face; that seemed like more of a waste of powder than anything else. Sure it would definitely knock her out but most of the powder would end up all over the floor and it would likely only give her a couple of hours of reprieve. ”Sorry I don’t have more… I was kind of broke when I bought it.” He was still kind of broke. Honestly, if he thought about it, there had been nothing stopping her from purchasing some sleep aid on her own. Actually…
…why hadn’t she?

| He pulled her into his room and she didn’t have enough strength to resist being shuffled about like a handicap person. If they were on land, Cross would have walked on her own free will and stared him down to cause Lezard to have second thoughts about touching her but right now she was simply trying to maintain her composure. Her mind was slowly going crazy; she could feel the ship moving and even worst she could feel her panic levels rising. The woman was already on high alert but she was going to be even more distraught soon.
She was placed on the bed as he went to mix something then handed her a cup of water and told her to sip it. Without her senses, all she could do was follow his orders rather than fight him. She took the cup and sipped from it like he instructed. It tasted a little strange but she didn’t vocalize her thoughts; Cross simply sipped all of the contains then sat there hoping for something to happen.
He explained why there was only a small amount and she just stared at him with her dead eyes. Apparently, she should have given him cash before going home and attempting to entrance herself into calmness. The hex on herself failed since she was still a frazzled mess and relying on him to help her right now seemed to be a bust since she was still very much awake and coherent.
“I see.”
Slowly, she stood up and walked towards the door. Her hand reached out as she grabbed the door. “I am going to sink this ship now since I have now reached the point of complete and utter panic,” she replied to him calmly. Perhaps the hexing did work and failed at the same time. Cross had tried to cast a spell to make her calm when she felt anxious and it seemed the spell made her sound calm when she was panicking; or perhaps it was her personality that made her sound calm while she was feeling scared out of her mind.
“I advise you gather your belongings and swim back for shore.”
But he couldn’t swim so he was extremely screwed in this situation. She reached her hand out as her lips started to move but no words came out. The room’s temperature dropped dramatically so that breath was visible as she started her spell to freeze the ship before she broke it in half.
She refused to be trapped in the middle of the ocean.

| She did as requested and sipped the contents of the canteen. She looked somewhat fried to be there and he hoped that it would help at least a little bit. Instead she fell quiet as he spoke a little. She stood up after a few moments upon finishing her canteen of water and announced she was going to go sink the ship now. Lezard chuckled uneasily; uncertain whether he should take her seriously or not. She warned him to grab his belongings and he glanced over to the things he had laid out on his bed. Suddenly it dawned on him that she might honestly be telling the truth and planned on breaking the ship. He couldn’t find the logic in the whole thing but he felt himself panic.
”We’re not on the ocean!” He spoke out quickly. He had no idea where the thought came from but now that he mentioned it he had to force himself to use it and play along. ”…we’re… flying. Drifting through the air.” Yeah, this could work… maybe. He just needed to get her to calm down and he knew making fun of her wasn’t going to do anything but unleash her anger on him and then on the boat. He walked over to her and tried to think of ways to comfort her. He laid shaky hands (unused to really touching people for an extended time, and uncertain whether she would just burn his hands off). He tried rubbing her shoulder; he was unskilled, and never done it before, but he figured people just enjoyed the action. He’s seen it performed on others so it was some form of physical comfort.
”Close your eyes, you can just see it. We’re air born… the boat is going against gravity as it rocks about in the clouds. Alongside us… the birds follow, wondering what this curious ship is doing in the air.” He fell silent for a few moments but kept awkwardly rubbing her shoulders. Was this the reason she hadn’t wanted to go to Besaid? That made his thought pause, was this also a possible reason why she didn’t ever want to be someone’s guardian? Because she would be forced out to sea, a place she couldn’t handle? ”Can you feel it? How weightless the vessel is as it travels across the clouds?”

| She was attempting to freeze the whole ship when he proclaimed they weren’t on the ocean but that was a lie. Cross was on a boat and they crossed the ocean. It was a horrible, horrible thing and this boat was going to be out at sea for days because Besaid wasn’t close to the city to Bevelle. Even so, the blue haired male claimed they were flying in the sky; it was complete lunacy.
Still, flying would be easier to handle than sailing across the sea. Sin didn’t appear on mountains or float up with the birds. The ocean didn’t swallow the sky ever. There was safety in the clouds. Slowly, the room started to warm back to normal. The male palmed her shoulder as he told her to close her eyes and she did as instructed. Lezard continued on with the fantasy of the ship being an airship. They were so high above the ground and ocean, sailing with the birds.
He asked if she could feel the weightlessness. Cross didn’t feel weightless or like she was flying. All she felt was heavy like her body wanted to drop. “No,” she replied. “I feel scared.” It was out of character to admit to weakness but her mind was in another place. “Ships do not fly. They are heavy and use chocobos to sail across oceans.” This thing was much too heavy to fly and there was no spell to make it float. Everything was run by pulleys and belts below using chocobos. It was all rather complicated since she had explored the bottom of a boat once as a child.
“The ocean is dangerous. Everything in it is capable of great destruction, including Sin.”
In order to survive, she needed to get back to land and that meant killing everyone who couldn’t swim so she could rush back to land. It was the only way.

| It was odd to hear her admit being scared when she could fry people on the spot with magic or blast them with water she conjures up on her own. For someone who had an affinity to the element of water, she didn’t respect it all that much. She just had an irrational fear of it, a phobia as it were, and it was that fear that was really causing her to act that way. He didn’t expect that he could have her get over the phobia with just a few simple words and playing at a fantasy of a boat flying. It was something that would require years of work most likely; if it would ever be something that is defeated.
”But how can destroying the ship, that is keeping you out of the ocean, possibly help you?” He tried reasoning. It was an illogical thing for her to want to do; it was surely something she had to realize even on a minute level. The loss of the vessel would only cause her to be tossed into the dark waters that she fear so greatly. Sin often attacks from the ocean but it isn’t unheard of for it to be out of the waters and onto the land.
”It’s something you’re going to have to accept. The boat is a sanctuary.” He paused for a moment as his hands stilled on her shoulders as he contemplated what else he could say that might help. His gaze drifted down to her right shoulder as he stood behind her. His hands started their movements once more, ”I’m scared of traveling alone in general. I was sheltered most of my life in one temple or another and the one time my family travels, a Sinspawn appears. I lost both my parents that day. This is the first time in ten years that I’ve traveled at all, and I’m doing it alone.”

| He was looking for a logical answer but she didn't have one. A ship that was sailing across the ocean kept her from falling into the ocean. If anything, she should have been protecting the ship to keep her safe but her mind didn't see it like that. This ship was an object of torture and it was going to be used to kill her. If anything, she needed to destroy it now! The problem was when she did, Cross would be in the ocean and have to get back to shore quickly. The longer she waited, the more distance there would be between her and land.
"This is no sanctuary. Something that will take me in the middle of the ocean is no safe haven. This is damnation."
He was still holding her shoulder when he confessed to being scared to traveling alone because he had been cared for all his life. His parents had died in Bevelle and he was in Kilik because the temple took him in. At the same time, he took his calling seriously that he was willing to travel the world alone. Lezard would face his fears because he wished to defeat Sin.
"When I was a child, Sin attacked and wiped out my village. I was found dead at sea by fishermen and they revived me and took me to Bevelle. My aunt was the one who cared for me after that. I am traveling to go see her in her final moments as gratitude for caring for me when I was most vulnerable," she explained in somewhat an outer body voice. Cross wasn't the sharing type. She wasn't even the friendly type to share something so personal with friends but at the moment she was vulnerable and weak; being out of her mind made her say things she shouldn't have.
"I am scared but I am facing my fear to see her. At the same time, I am scared and I am not a child. I do not wish to hide from my fears before destroy them. Destroying this boat is one small step to destroying the ocean," she admitted.
Slowly, her frame began to rock with the boat. Her head fell into his shoulder as her body became too heavy to hold up. She wasn't sure why her body was getting heavier and heavier feeling but it was starting to get hard to hold up.

| She shared her experience and when he learned it he could understand her feelings toward being on a boat. Sin had essentially already killed her through the use of the ocean as a weapon. Just like he was scared to travel alone due to an attack, she was afraid to be out on the ocean; however he was actively facing his fear of his own free will while she seemed only to do so when forced to do so. In that respect, there was at least one thing that he could feel like he was stronger than her with. He wasn't shaking like a leaf on a tree or slowly losing all rational thought.
He stiffened when her head fell on his shoulder and she started to lean and begin to feel heavy against him. He ceased his shoulder rubbing and held onto her shoulders to try and maintain her in an upright position. She wasn't that heavy but he wasn't that strong either and it dawned on him that the sleeping powder was starting to take effect. While she was getting further drowsy the less she was holding up her own weight and the more he was strained. He ended up being forced to remove his hands and wrapped his arms around her weight for a better hold. He stumbled backwards and half dragged Cross with him.
He felt his knees buckle as he hit the bed and ended up toppling down. Fortunately he had enough common sense to twist his form so that Cross landed on the bed beside him rather than on top of him. He supposed it was better than her landing on the floor. He was immediately up on his feet and backing away from the bed, "You okay?" He questioned and after a moment he picked her legs up and put them on the bed so she was laying fully on the bed. "Maybe you should stay there for now... Don't think having you pass out and falling face first on the floor would do you any good" he tried joking but he didn't have the fluctuation in his voice to come off as a tease but instead he sounded awkwardly.
"Uh, do you need anything?" He wasn't sure if there was anything on the ship that he could get that would make her feel any better. |

| She collapsed on him and he fell on the bed with her. While he managed to fall to the side, Cross fell face first in the bad and just laid there, stiffly; it was so awkward and odd to be in this position. He suggested the obvious suggestion but it didn't make her feel any better. This was his bed and she was faced down on it with her body feeling much too heavy to move. Was this really the sleeping powder working or was it her fears weighing her down? Cross groaned for a moment as she tried to move her body but all she managed was to prop her elbows up.
"I need to get off the boat," she said as the obvious answer.
He was attempting to help but his fear of traveling must have not been great compared to her fear of the ocean. Being alone and traveling alone wasn't something she minded. Loneliness was nice and calming, but the ocean was anything but calming. She could feel the rocking as they drifted out into sea. Nothing was ever good or calming out in the ocean. At any point, they could end up hitting terrible weather which would make the boat rock more. Sin could emerge from the ocean and topple the vessel upside down and kill all its passengers.
This thing was a disaster waiting to happen and all she could was feel heavy and powerless in her current state. Slowly, she shifted until she was one her side staring at a wall. Lezard was standing in the opposite direction as she laid there fairly helpless. "Hold my hand," she commanded sleepily. When her father or aunt made her travel when she was younger, they held her hand and stroked her hair to keep her calm during these trips. It had been several years since she had to leave Bevelle but the trick probably would work long enough for her to fall asleep.

| Hold her hand? He shuffled in place uncertainly as if he wasn’t completely sure what she said and what he heard were the same exact thing. He could have misheard her but the idea of just sitting there and holding her hand was an incredibly awkward idea; one that he wasn’t completely sure he was comfortable with doing. When he offered to get her something, he meant like a blanket, or water, or some kind of food for her. He imagined she would be falling asleep shortly and then he would just leave the room to go explore the ship. He’d likely end up back on the top deck to watch the ocean so he could give her some peace. Then again, that meant running the risk of her waking up with no one to keep her sane and from destroying the ship completely. Such a predicament… he didn’t know that offering to travel to Besaid with her would result in such weirdness.
”You.. want me… to hold your hand?” He finally asked for clarification. He glanced down at his hands and suddenly felt like maybe he should wash them before he even considered giving her what she wanted. His hands weren’t dirty but now he felt like they might be and he’d fear that she’d pick up on something he couldn’t see and claim that his hands were filthy so he shouldn’t be touching her. He gnawed on the inside of his lip as he considered other options but in the end decided that it should be a rather painless endeavor to fulfill.
He took a seat at the side of the bed before he gabbed one of her hands and held it in his lap with both of his. He wasn’t certain how one was supposed to hold a hand when trying to comfort someone, or if he was botching up the whole thing completely. His chest felt suddenly tight from the action as he was unused to physical comfort, much less being the one supplying it to others. He tried not to overanalyze how ridiculous the whole thing was and strived to take his mind off of the whole experience. He started to hum the Hymn of the Fayth lowly to distract himself.

| Her eyes closed as she laid on her side. Cross felt uneasy and the urge to destroy everything was still so strong but at this rate she'd be too heavy to swim back and drown lie the majority of the passengers. A watery grave was the only thing that awaited her now. She wished he got the sleep pin like she instructed him to purchase so he could have stabbed her with it and none of this would be a problem. Cross would have been sleep by now instead of panicking and attempting to think how to cast a spell while in a drowsy state.
Eventually, he gave in and she felt the bed press down behind her. There was hesitation upon his part, but soon enough she felt her hand lifted up and held by two hands. It wasn't necessarily comforting; he didn't hold her hand tightly or offer her a tender squeeze. His hands were clammy from nervousness and the cuffed her hand as if he didn't want to hold it like it was diseased. They stayed like that for three minutes before she pulled away.
"You are very bad at this," she explained before rolling over to face him. One of her blue eyes looked up at his shaky form and she grabbed the hand closest to her. Slowly, she forced his fingers to part open and interlocked their hands together. Her fingers pressed against the back of his palm as he slowly did the same action until they were holding hands. Once again, her eye began to close as she felt a little calmer.
"You need to learn people skills," she moaned sleepily. "It will be impossible to gain a guardian and no longer need to travel alone if you are scared to get close to people. Simple things like hand holding should not be so foreign."
Her head felt heavier and heavier and she wanted to berate him more but somewhere in her belittling him she fell asleep soundlessly.
