| The trip was anything but smooth but she somehow managed to spend days on the boat thanks to Lezard's help. While she had no problems thanking him, she didn't sound all that grateful when they got to land. In fact, she didn't look all too happy to be upon dry land either. It was hard to be happy to be in Besaid knowing she only came to say goodbye to a dying person who once cared for her. Life was so precious and easily exterminated but that was the norm of the world. Even if Sin didn't exist, it didn't mean death would stop.
It was all just a cycle.
"I hope you have better luck at this temple," she added with a frown.
This was supposed to be the easier temple so he should not have had any problems considering he had Ifrit and the summon awaiting here was weaker than his current. Things should have looked very bright for Lezard while things for Cross were going to get dim. Letting out a heavy sigh, she turned away and started to head away from the docks.
Her eyes slowly glanced over the quaint little island for a moment as tried to let herself remember the first time she came here because her aunt decided she wished to retire on such a tiny island. It was such a bittersweet memory, and now she was back to say her last goodbyes. Slowly, she trekked into the forest as the rest of the passengers seemed to be still talking on the docks.
It was always weird to her that the city wasn't near the docks and vice-versa. There were also minor fiends here but none of them were too much of a problem for someone like her. Her mind seemed to be focused on what she was supposed to say to a woman who was on her death bed. Should she be thanking her aunt for putting up with her during her younger years when she kept locking herself away to learn magic? Should she even say anything? Cross wasn't the sweetness or nicest girl; she was rude and a quite grim. Saying something might make things worse. While this wasn't the first time she experienced close to her dying, this was the first time that person someone died with such pre-warning.
"And yet, I am not sure which one is worse," she mumbled to herself. Knowing death was close or dying without warning; neither seemed all that grand in her eyes.

| It had been both the most interesting and most difficult boat ride he had ever been a part of. Interesting because he had to keep an eye on a woman who was ready to destroy the entire ship; and it was the most difficult for the very same reason. The moment they made port at Besaid, Lezard had expected Cross to gun for the lands like her life depended on it; yet she remained composed and made her way off the boat and onto the sands of the beach. She didn’t look very happy to be there but given the reason that drove her to come in the first place, he couldn’t blame her. She wished him luck (for the most part) at the temple. He performed Yevon’s prayer with a bow toward her, ”My prayers go with you and your aunt.” He stated sincerely.
He would have offered to go with her in the event that she needed someone there to help her through the trial ahead but he felt like it wasn’t his place. He may have helped her across the ocean but he wasn’t the type that truly knew how to help with a grieving individual aside from wanting to flee. He knew that as a summoner, he was also going to be charged with performing Sendings when the time came and people would be there to watch him perform such things as they grieve for their loved ones. Eventually he was going to have to suck it up and do his task; but not yet.
Not yet.
He closed his eyes and breathed in the ocean breeze before he turned toward the captain of the ship as he exited the vessel. He bowed in respect to the captain for the safe journey across the ocean. After a few moments stuck in the position, he continued forward and headed toward the village several minutes behind Cross. While the forest did prove to be dangerous, the fiends were nothing like those that surrounded Bevelle and much less like the Sin Spawn. Occasionally he could deal with a single fiend with a Ruin spell but when a group popped up or something a little larger than what he could deal with, he always had Ifrit at his disposal.
When he reached the Cliffside that overlooked the town, he paused to looked down at the small village. It was quaint, small, and the temple was easy to spot as it was the only large building in the town. He closed his eyes once more and braced for the trials ahead. This time he would succeed. Bevelle was met in failure, but this time he could succeed. He turned down the road and continued down it, he would be there soon and it was best not to take too much time simply standing there.

| Cross was deep in thought but not so deep that she was easily overtaken. Fiends appeared and with one word, a spell quickly took them out. Lighting crashed from the sky and erased any existence of the monster as she continued her walk and thoughts. While she might have been alert to fiends, she wasn’t paying attention to her path, so one misstep in a shallow hole in the road caused her fall off balance and twist her ankle as she fell to the ground.
Immediately her eyes widened in pain as she hit the ground. She let out a loud cry of pain as her hands grabbed her injured leg. Why couldn’t she catch a break at the moment?! Slowly, she attempted to get up and put pressure on it but at the most she could stand on one leg. Her hands gripped a tree near her as she heard someone coming up on her. Her blue eyes locked up upon the person just to frown even deeper.
“Lezard,” she moaned as her eyes shifted away.
She had just forced him to deal with a few days with her being unstable and now she needed him to heal her and walk her to town. Today was shaping into an absolutely miserable day. Closing her eyes, she rested against the tree as she lifted her leg up a little causing her skirt to shift. “I injured my leg. Can you heal it so I can continue on to Besaid?” she asked in a soft tone. “My mind is… elsewhere.”
If anything, she didn’t want to be here but at the same time Cross had to come. Things like death were so common so why was this troubling her so much?
The woman sighed as felt a warming sensation around her leg as the white magic started to take effect. All she suddenly remembered was him suggesting she travel with others so she wouldn’t get hurt and how she protested traveling because something like this would happen. She hated out they were both right and this place wasn’t dangerous. There was an inward groan as she put pressure back on her foot to test out her injury.
“Would you like to walk together?” she asked. There was no point in fighting this since the thing he called fate seemed to be pushing them together. The temple was in the small village as well as her aunto. It was logical to go together.

| When he saw Cross as he approached, he looked at her curiously as he expected her to already be in town. He made note that she leaning awkwardly against a tree and as he drew nearer she lifted her leg up and explained she hurt her leg. She wanted him to heal it. Her mind was elsewhere during her travels and that he can understand; although he found it odd that they kept getting pushed together in one way or another. His mind went back to what he stated in Bevelle; how he had been brought there to find her and get her to be his guardian. She had laughed, believe no such thing as fate, yet Fate kept bringing the two of them together.
He nodded once and knelt down on the ground before he hovered his hands over her leg, ”Still call it fate.” He mumbled to himself before his hands began to glow with holy light. It washed over the injury. When he was finished with the task at hand, he stood back up and gave Cross some room so she could test it out herself. She seemed to be able to stand on her own once more; a sign that he had accomplished what he had set out to do with her leg. He expected she would immediately walk off once more to get her mission completed as soon as possible; instead she asked if he wanted to walk together. He lowered his gaze to the ground, ”Yes.” He answered and allowed her to take the lead.
While the fiends were manageable even for him, he felt a lot better having a companion to walk with. It was that reassurance that even if something should go wrong and by some freak accident that the fiends in these parts managed to get the upper hand on him, there would be someone around to watch his back and get him out of a bad situation. His gaze shifted toward Cross’ form once more and his mind wandered. She had come to see an aunt that much he knew, but that implied that she had come to Besaid before. Was the travel across the ocean always that bad for her? ”When was the last time you came to Besaid? I imagine you must have been here before.” he’s never been to Besaid Island but it felt a lot like Kilika with all the tropical heat and the island.

| The trip was quiet as they headed though the forest; silence fit her well. Most of her day was spent in silence, reading. It didn’t last forever. They were walking together and so Lezard decided to try his hand at casual conversation. She paused for a moment, causing him to stop as she looked back at him. A brow lifted before the woman smirked and started to walk again. “Yes. I have been here about five years ago,” she answered. Her aunt decided to retire on the island she was bored on.
Besaid was the hometown of her aunt and mother. When she was a small child and her mother was still alive, they came to the island once a year to visit her grandmother. Once her grandmother died, her aunt decided to move back in the house since she had lost most of her family. It was a rather sad thing fate though Cross had no intentions of moving here once her aunt passed.
“Despite my great fear of the ocean, I have been traveling a few places. Besaid. Luca. Guadosalam.”
Her father traveled and on occasion her mother wished to see him so the small girl was forced to tag along. Once she grew up, family was still the reason why she was forced to leave Bevelle to go traveling to some other city. Still, exploring the world wasn’t too dreadful. There were several interesting things awaiting in different towns that didn’t exist in Bevelle though Besaid was boring.
It was a tiny island full of nothing that people stayed on for whatever reason. It was just another tiny town like the one she was born on. One day, Sin might wipe the town and none would be the wiser.
She didn’t turn the question back on him since he had already explained his sheltered life to her while on the boat. Cross imply continued walking as they got closer to the town. A fiend appeared though she dispatched it so easily that neither had to stop.
“The world is vast and interesting, though there is not enough land for my taste, obviously. I would very much like it if what you said was true. Flying with the birds seems safer than sailing the oceans with Sin.”
She finally stopped as they stood at the entrance of the small town. Her eyes scanned the area as there seemed to be several people in front of her aunt’s house. “Hmm,” she moaned as she had a sudden sinking feeling. A female seemed to notice the duo and came rushing towards them.
“Constantina! You’re here! But… you’re too late.”
Cross groaned as she looked away. She had traveled all this way just to be too late. Perhaps all that lollygagging to think of words did it, or maybe she died while she was out at sea. It made this whole trip so useless. “Right,” she sighed and shook her head.
“And who’s this?”
“My traveling companion, Lezard Rio.”
Because regardless how she tried to avoid him, they always seemed to be traveling together. To him, it was fate. To her, it was all a coincidences seemed to keep happening.
“Well, I guess I should go to the temple and find a priest. We will need someone to perform final resting.”
“Oh? Do not worry, the man with me will do it, right Lezard? That is a duty of a Summoner...”

| So her last visit was five years ago, he nodded once at that and despite her fear she had been able to travel to Luca and Guadosalam, ”Well fortunately, Luca and Guadosalam you can technically reach by land from Bevelle. At least, to my understanding.” He spent a long time studying the map of Spira so that he knew where places were and what the best course of travel would be. He didn’t want to get caught lost in the middle of some forest where fiends were the most vicious. He was little and likely wouldn’t last very long. Still, there was always the option to take a boat, and by the sounds of it, she had done so despite the inconvenience it must have been for her.
”Hmm… to fly would be a wonderful thing; unless one flew through a thunderstorm. That probably wouldn’t be the greatest experience.” Neither was being on the receiving end of a thunder spell for that matter. Whatever fiends crossed their path Cross was easily able to remove it from their path without slowing down. It must have been nice to wield such power. As they drew to the entrance, the pair came to a halt as they arrived at the town. He thought that he might as well head toward the temple, as the pair were both safe at the town and Cross likely would want to see her aunt now; except someone came rushing toward them and called for Cross’s attention by a name he wasn’t familiar with. Had the message not been grim news, he would have commented on Constantina’s name; however there was no room for questions.
His gaze shifted toward his traveling companion to gauge her reaction and she seemed rather collected over the whole thing. He expected her to be a little more broken up about the news considering she had taken the effort to travel across the sea and all the way to Besaid. When Cross introduced him, he bowed respectfully, ”My condolences for your loss.” He offered before the woman announced that she was going to head toward the temple. That was when he was pulled into the whole mix.
”I…it is a duty of a summoner to perform a Sending.” He admitted uncomfortably. H scratched the back of his head as he thought about how awkward it was to perform his first Sending for someone related to Cross. The threads of Fate were truly messing with them. ”Very well, please escort me, I will ensure her spirit is Sent to the Farplane.” He couldn’t hesitate; this was one of the things as a Summoner that he was expected to do and he should not have his resolve shaken.
He was led to the house that Cross’s aunt had lived in and as he approached, many others that crowded around parted ways to allow him entry. The aunt was located in her bed; it appeared people had already dressed her for a ceremony; a sign that she hadn’t just died. He placed his pack down on the floor near the door and stepped toward the center of the room; staff in hand. Slowly he drew in a long breath before he started to perform the Sending. He blocked everything else out around him; and focused on the task at hand. The idea that he was to guide the woman’s spirit to the Farplane so she wouldn’t become a fiend was a chilling thought. He danced, and the eventually a pyrefly drew out of the body, circled around him as he spun slowly, before it drifted away.
He tapped the end of his staff down on the floor lightly to mark the ending of the Sending. He released a long breath turned to the grieving individuals and bowed to them while he gave his condolences. He held that for a few seconds before he slowly moved to where he discarded his sack. He hefted it up on his shoulder, and left the house to give the family and loved ones of the deceased some peace. He stood outside of the house quietly and stared up in the sky; as if he believed he might see the pyrefly floating somewhere up there. A day he would no longer have to perform Sendings would one day arrive, and that day would be one to strive for.

| He stuttered how it was his duty but that the same time his face said he didn’t wish to do it. Cross glanced at him as she raised a brow but he seemed to get over what caused him to sound so hesitant. The white mage asked to be lead and her cousin showed him to the house. The pink haired woman simply followed behind with a somber look.
The moment she walked into the home, memories filled her head of the three women who had lived here and were all gone now. Her grandmother and aunt had passed in this house and yet it was filled with so many happy memories. The world was so very strange to have so many places that could bring smiles and tears. Everyone in the home was mourning the loss of a friend and loved one and yet, they all seemed happy and respectful of Lezard. Even though her aunt had been someone who died because of Sin, everyone still acknowledge how important the Summoner was and gave him the space he needed.
Cross hung in the back as he made his way to the room. Her eyes kept away from the ceremony as she stared at the ground for a long moment. Even after he had finished and all of the people started to bow to him in gratitude, Cross kept from looking in his direction down at the ground. Her mind seemed to be much too heavy to concentrate on anything. It took her cousin grabbed her hand to realize that Lezard was leaving for her to bow her head in respect for what he had done.
The male exited and she went back to leaning against the wall. This trip was for nothing since she had endured coming her simply to see her aunt before she passed but was too late. So what was the point? Heading back on the boat made her feel nauseous and coming here for absolutely no reason seemed like such a waste.
“Are you going to stay?” her cousin asked.
“Huh? I.. don’t know,” the pink haired woman admitted easily as she tilted her head to the side and pressed a manicured nail against her chin. What was she here for?
There was a certain young man who called their meeting fate. She had been around him for a week now, and every time she tried to go against it, something would happen to push her back to him. “Actually, I have something to do,” she mumbled as she shook her head. She was already regretting the decision in the back of her head. “Please make sure there’s room for two tonight. I’ll be back later, okay?”
The pink haired woman quickly exited the house as she slowly walked towards the idling man as he stared at the sky. Raising a brow, Cross came up behind the Summoner with her arms crossed. “Staring at the sun is actually bad for your eyes,” she commented dully. "It’s going to be hard to see your way through the temple if you’re blind. I can help defend you but I can’t protect you from yourself.”

| He was pulled out of his thoughts when Cross’ voice drifted into his ears. He shifted his sights down toward her, ”No, I wasn’t I…” was seeing if your aunt’s soul was still floating around seemed like a very inappropriate comment to make so he trailed off instead. He shook his head and thought about questioning the woman if she was alright. The only reason he didn’t was because he realized how stupid of a question that would have been to ask. She just found out her aunt died and had to say goodbye
"It’s going to be hard to see your way through the temple if you’re blind. I can help defend you but I can’t protect you from yourself.”
Lezard starred at her in response and was uncertain what he should think or say for that matter. Was she subtly telling him that she travel through the Cloister of Trials with him? Only Summoners and their Guardians were allowed to go through the trials. Was she then stating that she would now become his guardian? Should he ask for clarification what she meant by that statement? He felt like if he asked her flat out she would either change or mind or deny what he was interpreting. Why were people so hard to read? He wasn’t sure if he had the mental prowess to keep up with people if they were as confusing as Cross seemed to be.
”Are you prepared for the trials ahead? You took care of most of the fiends on the way to Besaid. I do not wish to push you needlessly.” He could always take the trials tomorrow if anything. He was in a hurry; but only because he was anxious. In actuality, one who made haste through the trials only left themselves open for mistakes that could cost them success. The trials were a serious matter; one that he had to constantly remind himself not to rush off to do. He thought after he finally became a summoner, the Trials wouldn’t have any more trouble that he couldn’t handle but Bevelle had proven the contrary. He also hoped she understood, without him questioning it, that she was accepting the role as a Guardian. If she wasn't, it only risked him the Trials more. There were certain practices that had to be upheld; if he had someone present outside of the chambers that wasn't a guardian, he could very well be ex-communicated from the Fayth.

| He asked if she was prepared for the trials ahead. She nodded solemnly; a few fiends in the forest really weren't tiring. Being in that house made her feel a bit exhausted by the further she got away from all the memories, the lighter her mind would feel. Besides, something kept driving them together. If she went to the temple with him and the male still failed then obviously it meant she wasn't meant to be his Guardian since he still failed with her aid. His belief in them fated to be together and Yevon wanting her to be his Guardian would be squashed.
"I have fought harder things and been okay to fight after that," she said calmly. He should have known that since he was there as they fought a Sin Spawn days ago then watched her continue on while he was trained from such events. To use her powers constantly wasn't anything new. Cross had been pushing herself beyond her limits for years so she could be stronger. She wanted to do something that would require a lot of strength but it wasn't really travel the world with an intelligent but weak man.
Life was odd.
"Do you need to rest? Otherwise, I do not see the point in dillydallying. You came to this island strictly to go conquer this temple."
He didn't need to stall. The first day they encountered each other, he was headed from the boats to the temple. Today should have been no different. This sleeping Aeon was supposed to be weaker than the one he encountered before so it overcoming him shouldn't be been an issue; the fact she was around should have granted him more power.
After she experienced the trial and saw him fail or succeed would set her mind to see if he was right in this matter or if she was right. If he was right, he'd succeed and she would see this was truly what she came to this island for; Yevon was showing her another way. That was if he was right though. Cross folded her arms as she gave the male a dissatisfied look; she didn't feel like she was meant to be his Guardian. The whole thought seemed quite absurd. He was so weak and passive; he frustrated to her to no end with his trivial responses. They weren't friends at all either. The male couldn't hold a hand properly when she needed him.
"Let us go," she instructed as she took the lead once again. She wasn't okay being idle. She had to know if this truly was why she was here.

| She was fine to continue and he wasn’t going to question it further than he already had. She knew her limits, he did not, and she seemed to be an intelligent woman so she wouldn’t risk anything if her limits were near their breaking point. While no fiends lurked in the temples or the Trials, that didn’t make them any less dangerous. They were a maze to get through, a puzzle to solve, and there were traps that an unsuspecting individual could fall into. Kilika’s dangers were the fires that constantly spouted out and the first time he went through it, he had been singed more than he cared to share. The second time he was able to get through it without much difficulty; having already learned where traps were and the dangers. He simply failed to connect with the Fayth despite how much he prayed and how long.
‘Dillydallying’ was not a word he expected to be part of Cross’ vocabulary and the fact that she used it made it seem all the more amusing to him. He kept the amusement from his expression but it certainly wasn’t able to be hidden from his gaze. He shook his head, ”I am fine. You cleared most of the fiends on the way.” While he had fought a few fiends on his way to Besaid Village, he imagined there would have been a lot more had Cross not gone ahead of him. He handled himself decently for the most part and gained some experience with Ifrit. The summon was taxing to use but it couldn’t be helped until he grew used to it.
She moved ahead and took the lead once more; which Lezard was happy to hand out to her. He felt the anticipation build up with him. This would be the first time he would be going through the trials with someone else. Someone there to aid him on the way there; it wouldn’t be so difficult with Cross around, right? He felt a small glimmer of hope build up in his chest at the idea and a newfound confidence began to grow. He couldn’t tackle the pilgrimage alone; he knew that, but now he didn’t have to.
